Assignment 5.1: Self-Critique Part 2

In what seems to be the never-ending journey of critiquing the same images over and over every week, this week I'm supposed to pick 5 of my previously submitted images and critique their proportions using the course's preferred ideal human measurements.

Strangely enough, there are only 5 human images in the entire portfolio, so I'll just critique them all below:

Judging this image by the course's proportional rules,  the legs are too short compared to the torso.  However, I'll give this one a pass considering it's a self portrait, and apparently my own proportions are less than ideal :P  The image checks correctly against photographs of myself.

Wow, I had gotten feedback last week that the left leg was too long, but after comparing to the module, it's way more out of proportion than I had originally thought.   He also has a very short upper fourth, and the arms/legs aren't equal to each other, even after accounting for foreshortening.

Jane's proportions seem pretty close to the ideal, although its tough to rate the arms from the drawing.  The left foot appears too small as it recedes into the background.

In this drawing, I think the upper quadrant of the body is a bit too long.  The hand might be slightly large as well.  It would probably be more accurate if the hand was that size when extended.

This is a fairly accurate proportion, but perhaps the thighs are slightly too short.  It's accurate to the model, however.  It may of course be an issue with the clothing obscuring the body parts, however.

All in all, the proportions in my drawings weren't terrible, but they did have some weaknesses.  The sci-fi character design however, was completely off, even more so than I noticed when first critiquing it.  It seems like every time I step away from it and come back, I get a clearer picture of all the wrong things with it.  I will probably redraw or maybe remove it in the future.

Reaching Out

This week for class I was supposed to "reach out" to community websites related to my artistic fields and get some feedback from other forum users.  I'll sum up the feedback I received below:

First up, I posted a message over on ConceptArt.org (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=271831), showing off the clothed figure drawing of my friend Jane and a concept sketch of a sci-fi character.

For the figure drawing, the feedback was largely complimentary.  Issued point out were a slight angle here or there or maybe the shape of her foot.  Outside of these, it was mentioned that maybe an increased level of value would improve the drawing.

There was much more critique geared towards the concept sketch.  The issues with the proportions were mentioned, as were a perspective issue in the legs. Strangely enough, they didn't mention the right arm, which is the part that bothers me the most.  I think what learned from these critiques is that there's not always just one answer to "what's wrong with this?".  The little things add up.

Secondly, I posted my Camaro model over on CG Society(http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=43&t=1126859).

The replies didn't come in very quickly, but I did get a little feedback on it.  They mainly pointed out some minor but helpful points on the model.  Critique like this is very helpful, because they tend to get overlooked when you've been staring at the model for hours and hours on end.

I think that's about it for this week, while I didn't get as many messages as I'd hoped, I did manage to get some feedback.  I'll have to try this again with future projects sometime.
